How much hair should I remove when texturising?

As a rule, aim to remove 10-20% of bulk for subtle thinning and 20-30% for noticeable weight removal. Never remove more than 40% as this can create an uneven, stringy appearance. It is always better to do less and reassess — you can always remove more but cannot put it back.

When should I use thinning scissors vs a razor?

Thinning scissors are best for controlled, even bulk removal on dry or wet hair. Razors create more movement and tapered ends but should only be used on wet hair and healthy hair — they can cause splitting on damaged or dry hair. Point cutting offers the most subtle texturising for precision work.

Where should texturising be applied?

Never texturise at the roots or within the first 5cm of growth — this creates short spiky hairs that stick up. Focus on mid-lengths to ends. For thinning scissors, start about one-third of the way down the hair shaft. For curly hair, texturise less as curl pattern already creates movement.

Can texturising damage hair?

Aggressive texturising techniques like razor slicing can damage the cuticle if done on dry or damaged hair.
