What is the difference between balayage and foilayage?

Balayage is a freehand painting technique where lightener is applied to the hair surface without foils, giving a soft, natural result. Foilayage combines balayage painting with foils to increase lift and create more defined contrast. Foilayage generally requires more product and processing time.

How many foils do I need for a full balayage?

A full balayage on medium-density, medium-length hair typically uses 40 to 55 foils. Fine or short hair may need fewer (25 to 35). Thick or long hair may need 60 or more. The exact count depends on the desired result — more foils for more visible lightened pieces.

What developer volume should I use for balayage?

For balayage, 20 volume (6%) is the most common developer. Use 10 volume for subtle lift on pre-lightened hair, 30 volume for darker base levels needing more lift, and 40 volume only for very dark virgin hair (with close monitoring). Clay-based lighteners process more gently.
