What is a line-up in barbering?

A line-up (also called an edge-up or shape-up) is the process of creating clean, defined edges around the hairline, temples and sideburns using a precision trimmer or razor. It frames the face and gives the haircut a fresh, sharp appearance. It is one of the most requested finishing services.

How long does a line-up take?

A basic front-only line-up takes 5-7 minutes. A full line-up including temples, sideburns and nape takes 10-15 minutes. Adding a razor finish adds 3-5 minutes. Curly or coily hair types add 3-5 minutes due to more careful shaping needed. Line-ups with designs can take 15-20+ minutes.

How does hair type affect a line-up?

Straight hair shows edges very crisply but any mistakes are visible. Curly and coily hair (types 3-4) requires more time because the curl pattern can distort the visual hairline. The barber needs to work slowly and check from multiple angles. Coarse hair dulls blades faster.

How do I handle cowlicks and uneven growth?

Cowlicks and whorls change the direction hair grows at the hairline. Work with the growth pattern where possible rather than fighting it. Use shorter strokes and check frequently. Some areas may need a slightly different approach on each side to look balanced.
